Speakers 2007: Art Jones, MD

Art Jones, MD was born and raised in upstate New York; attended college (Hamilton College) and medical school (Yale University, cum laude) in the Northeast and moved to Colorado in 1971 with plans to complete two years of General Surgery training (University of Colorado) before returning to Yale to pursue Neurosurgery training. Dr. Jones was elected to AOA, national Medical honorary while at Yale. However, the U.S. Army intervened and, while commanding a small medical facility in Korea, Dr. Jones decided that Colorado was a great place to live and Neurosurgery wasn’t so interesting. Dr. Jones returned to Colorado and completed surgery training in 1979. During residency, Dr. Jones performed research (and published) with Dr. Tom Starzl, studying liver regeneration and liver transplantation issues. Dr. Jones was in private practice, specializing in Thoracic and Vascular Surgery, primarily in Wheat Ridge, from 1979 to 2003.

Dr. Jones has served as Chairman, Department of Surgery at Lutheran Hospital where he also served as Chair of the Utilization Review committee. He was Board Certified (and recertified twice) in Surgery. In 1993, Dr. Jones decided that “business” ran “healthcare” so went back to school (UCD) and received both an MBA and MSHA in 1998. He was elected to Beta Gamma Sigma, a national Business honorary, while at UCD and received the Director’s Award as outstanding graduate. In 2003 Dr. Jones joined Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield and is Chief Medical Officer for Colorado and Nevada. In addition, he serves on national Medical Policy and Credentials committees and various clinical and business advisory panels for WellPoint, Inc. (Anthem’s parent company). Dr. Jones is a member of the American College of Surgeons (past president of the Colorado chapter), Denver Academy of Surgery (past president), AMA, Western Surgical Association, Southwestern Surgical Congress, AOA, Beta Gamma Sigma (business honorary) and has served on committees for Noridian, Medicare (CAC), and MGMA.
